{"id":184,"date":"2012-10-09T14:46:23","date_gmt":"2012-10-09T14:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/20845.graphitasdev.co.uk\/news\/?p=184"},"modified":"2016-06-13T09:13:01","modified_gmt":"2016-06-13T09:13:01","slug":"richards-dry-dock-alicat-workboats-end-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alicatworkboats.com\/news\/richards-dry-dock-alicat-workboats-end-era\/","title":{"rendered":"Richards Dry Dock >>>Alicat Workboats &#8211; The End of an Era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The last remaining wooden dry dock in England is being decommissioned.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Richards in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, was built more than 100 years ago but is not big enough to accommodate a lot of modern boats.<\/p>\n<p>General manager Simon Coote said a \u00a32m refurbishment project would see the dock become a boat lifting facility, specialising in smaller boats.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \\\\\\&#8221;I\\\\\\&#8217;m sad, but I see it as a very big stepping stone for the security of the yard.\\\\\\&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Coote said about 300 people would have worked at the dock in the early part of the 20th Century.<\/p>\n<p>\\\\\\&#8221;Most of the boats we\\\\\\&#8217;re dealing with now are far too big to actually fit in the dry dock, so our market share has gone right down,\\\\\\&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\\\\\\&#8221;We looked at trying to refurbish the dock and make it a lot wider to accept the bigger vessels, but that was completely uneconomical.\\\\\\&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The refurbishment is due to be completed by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on this article\u00a0<a title=\"\\&quot;End\" href=\"\\&quot;http:\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-norfolk-19678936\\&quot;\" target=\"\\&quot;_self\\&quot;\">click here\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE &#8211; The start of a new era<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Work on the installation of the new 200 tonne hoist has begun at the Alicat facilities in Great Yarmouth.<\/p>\n<p>The hoist is due for completion by\u00a0April 2013 enabling Alicat to offer full lift out and repair service facilities for all types of vessels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last remaining wooden dry dock in England is being decommissioned.
